Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship
This is a programme which lasts around five years and leads to qualification as a Chartered Legal Executive.
Apprenticeships are flexible and designed to offer a structured programme of learning to fit around the needs of the individual and the employer. Learning takes place during working hours through the development of ‘on the job’ skills. However there is an ‘off the job’ training element which usually takes place away from work, for example, at Coventry University, on day release or over a number of days in a block. Both the ‘on’ and ‘off the job’ elements of the apprenticeship lead to nationally recognised qualifications awarded by CILEx.
The apprenticeship encompasses:
- All CILEx academic requirements – currently ten Level 3 units and six Level 6 units.
- Qualifying employment rules and work-based learning requirements.
- The completion of an extended case study.
An apprenticeship is a structured programme of learning consisting of vocational ‘on the job’ learning leading to a competence based qualification, and academic learning leading to a formal knowledge based qualification. Apprenticeships also include transferable skills in English, Maths and ICT. Apprentices must be employed during the training period and will be paid a wage. There is government funding available to support the costs of training delivery and the total amount varies according to the age of the apprentice.

Programme Content & Delivery
How will the training be delivered and assessed?
- The CILEx Level 6 Chartered Executive Diploma (Higher Apprenticeship) consists of a competence based qualification and a knowledge based qualification.
- The competence based qualification is mainly delivered through a blended approach and is assessed by a professional Tutor.
- The knowledge based qualification must be delivered when the apprentice is not performing his or her job role. The delivery of this qualification will depend on the training provider but will include day release. The units within the qualification are assessed by examination, except for Client Care Skills and Legal Research skills which are assessed by skills based tasks.
Work vs Study balance
What hours can an apprentice work?
Apprentices must work a minimum of:
- 30 hours a week (excludes lunch breaks)
- the maximum is 40 hours for 16-18 year olds
- 48 hours for 19 years+.
How much time will the apprentice need for study during working hours?
There are two options available. The apprenticeship employer can either choose for an apprentice to be released for one day a week or released for a block of days once a month to complete the knowledge part of the apprenticeship.
