The School of Energy, Construction and Environment brings together the disciplines affecting the natural and built environment, using synergies that link the understanding of the natural environment and its resources in the production of the physical built environment and its possible impact on the natural environment

We offer apprenticeships across a range of construction disciplines and specialisms:

Civil Engineers work as part of a team of engineers and other construction professionals through all lifecycle stages of development, design, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of civil engineering infrastructure. A Civil Engineer might work in public and private sector organisations including local authorities, central government departments and agencies, engineering consultancy practices, contracting firms and research and development organisations.

Building Services are environmental systems in buildings such as electrical power, air conditioning, heating and lighting. A Building Services Design Engineer will manage a team of engineers and technicians and collaborate with other construction professionals to design the various services found in buildings and infrastructure projects. As building services design engineers they could be working in a design consultancy, for a contractor or a manufacturing company.

Building Services Engineering Site Management staff lead the installation of complex environmental systems in construction projects. Typical job titles can include: Assistant Building Services Engineering Site Manager, Building Services Installation Manager or Project Engineer. 

A Chartered Surveyor provides professional advice and recommendations to clients on land, property or construction.

Apprenticeships Available

Civil Engineer

Level 6 | 5 years

Civil Engineers work in both public and private sector organisations to provide technical and management input to develop design solutions for complex civil engineering problems. They work as part of a team with other engineers and construction professionals. A Civil Engineer needs a broad skills base to work in areas including sustainable construction, structural integrity, geotechnics (engineering behaviour of earth materials), materials, tunnelling, marine and coastal engineering, water, waste management, flood management, transportation and power. 

A Civil Engineer’s work consists of:

  • Project delivery
  • Design
  • Analysis
  • Construction

On successful completion of the five year programme, apprentices will be awarded a BSc or BEng Civil Engineering honours degree awarded by Coventry University and accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators. Apprentices will also qualify for registration as an Incorporated Engineer by the relevant professional engineering institution.

The programme is equally suitable for new employees and existing members of staff. There is no age limit.

The course is delivered in 14 modules over five years by day release. It includes workplace projects based on the apprentice’s own job role and an optional module chosen from: Steel and Concrete Structures; Timber and Masonry Structures; Transport Infrastructure; Hydrology, Modelling and Water Engineering; Construction, Resource and Quality Management and Advanced Surveying.


Building Services Design Engineer

Level 6 | 5 years

Building Services Engineering is the field responsible for the design, specification, construction, installation, operation, and monitoring of all the mechanical, electrical and public health systems necessary for the safe, secure, efficient and environmentally friendly operation of buildings. With an emphasis on engineering practice and its role within the construction industry, the course reflects the interdisciplinary and global nature of the construction industry; providing the apprentice with an understanding of how professionals need to work together to ensure that modern buildings are constructed economically, efficiently and in a sustainable way.


Chartered Surveyor (Quantity Surveying pathway)

Level 6 | 5 years

Providing professional advice and recommendations to clients on land, property or construction.

The main duties and tasks of a surveyor are:

  • To provide professional advice and recommendations to clients relating to land, property or construction
  • To manage client instructions from engagement to completion
  • To liaise with other professionals
  • To negotiate contracts and prices
  • To analyse data relating to land, buildings or construction
  • To follow due diligence in providing advice to clients
  • To undertake detailed inspections of buildings, land or construction
  • To analyse information from inspections or visits to buildings, land and construction sites

The typical duration of this apprenticeship is five years. Successful apprentices will achieve a degree in Surveying and full chartered membership of the RICS. The degree will incorporate vocational and academic elements.


Chartered Surveyor (Building Surveying pathway)

Level 6 | 5 years

Problem-solving on a grand scale; a Building Surveying degree apprenticeship can teach your employee much sought-after advice on property and construction.

The world’s rising population has led to a massive shortfall in infrastructure with $57 trillion needed by 2030, according to global management consultancy McKinsey. With a growing demand for the specialist skills to undertake the full range of work from new build and refurbishment to defect analysis, adaptation and energy audits, building surveying is one of the most exciting areas of the property and construction industry.

Ranked as the 4th best university in the country for ‘Building and Town and Country Management’ in the Guardian University Guide 2020, Coventry has been educating building professionals for over half a century, keeping in step with the changing needs of technological advancement and the growing importance of its social and environmental responsibilities.  

This apprenticeship is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the world's leading professional body for qualifications and standards in land, property, infrastructure and construction.


Senior Leader Master's Degree Apprenticeship

Level 7

A leader is someone who has senior management responsibility, and this can include formal governance/director responsibilities. They are responsible for direction and vision, providing a clear sense of purpose and driving strategic intent. They take into account market trends and environmental influences, identifying longer-term opportunities and risks. Through inclusive leadership, they are responsible for developing ethical, innovative and supportive cultures with the ability to deliver results.

They are a role model, with responsibility for those in senior positions/significant organisational budgets.
