Teaching English as a Foreign Language
Teaching English for Academic Purposes: Bespoke Courses for your Learners and Teacher Training
We have a thriving and expanding pre-sessional English programme helping over 1,000 students each year meet the English language proficiency required to progress onto Coventry University degrees; in addition, we deliver in-country pre-sessional courses in China and academic English support throughout the year in Coventry, China and Turkey.
The Department of English and Languages (DEL) brings together scholars who share a fundamental interest in using language effectively and understanding how language is used in a variety of social and professional settings. For example, on the British Council website you will find the writing for a Purpose project which is based on research done by Professor Hilary Nesi and Dr Sheena Gardner from DEL.
Coventry University has the expertise to develop bespoke course for your institution’s needs, whether General English or Academic English, English for Specific Purposes or vocational English. Previously we have put together courses for foreign companies or visiting groups of students in disciplines ranging from Engineering to Sports and Event Management. Developing capacity for online or blended learning is also a service we can provide with the support of our Learning Technologists.
In addition to a wealth of experience in teaching learners English, we offer an intensive CELTA teacher training course each summer and a successful MA in English Language Teaching (ELT). Increasing numbers of foreign students are opting to take our MA in ELT in recognition of the fact that the theory and practice of the pedagogy we teach in the UK is key for them to understand and replicate where appropriate so as to best prepare their own students for study in the UK. We have delivered workshops to high school teachers in China and we can also offer more extended courses to teachers who want to learn more about teaching English for Academic Purposes and the communicative methodology.
