ICDL improves learners’ understanding of computers and promotes efficient use of software. The qualification is widely recognised by employers as proof of ability and competence when working with IT.
Course detail
The International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) is the internationally recognised qualification for computer users. ICDL improves learners’ understanding of computers and promotes efficient use of software. The course opens up a variety of opportunities through the broad range of skills it provides.

ICDL Foundation (seven units)
Consists of the following Modules:
Security for IT Users
The security for IT users unit provides the learner with an essential understanding of how to use a computer in a safe and secure manner, protecting their own data as well as that of other users.
Computer Essentials
Computer Essentials builds the learner’s confidence by teaching basic interaction with computers, from start-up, to productive use and basic computer housekeeping.
Using the Internet and Email
This unit helps the learner understand how to use internet and email in a safe and secure way. It explains key terms and builds knowledge of the fundamentals of computer security and use of the internet and email.
Word Processing
This unit develops the learner’s ability to create word-processed documents: entering text, editing and formatting work, and using graphs, tables and pictures for a professional finish. The learner will also understand how to work more effectively using tools such as the spellchecker and mail merge.
Spreadsheet Software
This ICDL unit helps learners to develop a working knowledge of spreadsheets, from entering data and formatting worksheets, through to creating charts and producing high-quality documents.
Presentation Software
The presentation software unit introduces the learner to this important means of business communication. Upon completion, learners will be capable of producing high-quality presentations using a variety of tools, including charts, graphs and drawn objects.
Database Software
This unit enables learners to understand some of the main concepts of databases and demonstrate the ability to use a database application. This includes creating and modifying tables, queries, forms, reports, and preparing outputs ready for distribution, as well as learning to relate tables and retrieve and manipulate information from a database by using query and sort tools.
How will this course be taught
These qualifications are taught virtually online.
You can register at any time of the year within the 3 academic semesters and can move through the course at you own pace.
Testing can be done in-person on Campus in our Accredited Test Centre or remotely via MS Teams is preferred.
Entry requirements
The virtual online course teaches each module from scratch.
Assessment
To pass the full ICDL Foundation module, you must take a 45 minute test for each of the seven ICDL modules.
We have remote off Campus testing for those who need it.
The automated test system will give you instant results. The pass mark is 75% or more on each module to achieve the qualification.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
- You agree to produce ID in accordance with the requirements, i.e. BCS ID Requirements list (one item from list one or two items from list 2) on your induction that can be in person or via Zoom Be aware that no registrations for the qualifications can be made without ID.
- Once you have paid for your self-study qualification, the registration is made with BCS who will not refund that registration. That registration has been agreed and paid for and therefore it cannot be used by another so there can be no refunds on these courses.
