It provides health and social care professionals the opportunity to develop their quality improvement and leadership skills and to develop the tools needed to deliver high quality personalised care.

Why study this course?

This course provides continuing professional development for health and social care professionals from a range of backgrounds. It is aimed at health and social care professionals who are ready to develop the skills needed to lead meaningful changes in practice to enable the delivery of care that focuses on ‘what matters most’ to the patient.

This course will enable you to demonstrate your commitment to your own ongoing professional development. Modules can be taken on a stand-alone basis or alternatively two or three modules can be taken together at level 6 to achieve an Advanced Certificate in Professional Development or three modules at level 7 to achieve a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development. Taken at level 7, it will help you to develop the critical reading, writing, thinking and reflective practice skills needed for further MSc studies.

Qualification type

Modules can be taken alone for professional development at level 6 or 7. Alternatively two or three modules can be taken together at level 6 to achieve an Advanced Certificate in Professional Development or three modules at level 7 to achieve a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development.

Course detail

This course is delivered 100% online a multi professional teaching team, utilising a variety of delivery methods including the latest virtual and technology-enhanced healthcare simulation technology.

The course is taught by a combination of mandatory live online sessions (30 hours for each module), guided learning (30 hours per module) and self-guided independent learning (140 hours per module). This combination of learning methods means that you can plan most of your studying at a time that suits you, enabling you to better fit learning around your work and home life.

As an innovative and enterprising institution, the University may seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), the University may deliver certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods.

Modules

Those undertaking the Advanced Certificate in Professional Development (level 6) will need to complete two or three level 6 modules.

Those undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development (level 7) will need to complete all three level 7 modules.

Module 1: Enhanced Practice to Support Personalised Care (20 credits)

This module explores complexity of care supporting practitioners to develop enhanced professional judgement, knowledge, and communication skills in delivering high quality personalised care. You will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of holistic assessment and interventions with its application within diverse settings across health and social care based on a critical use of evidence informed practice.

Module 2: Leading and Influencing for Change (20 credits)

This module explores complexity of care in the context of a continually changing landscape of health and social care. It aims to provide you with the opportunity to enhance your leadership skills to negotiate working in multidisciplinary team, services and systems to enhance integrated care. You will critically examine leadership to gain understanding of ethical leadership, culture and values-based healthcare. Through the application of reflective practice, you will critically reflect on your observed experiences of leadership in delivering integrated care to develop strategies to enhance personalised care across differing practice contexts.

Module 3: Enhancing Quality Informed Care (20 credits)

This module explores the principles of quality informed care to develop enhanced knowledge of quality improvement methodologies, evidence informed practice and change theories to enable practitioners to be confident leaders of continuous improvement across health and social care.

Entry requirements

  • Must be a registered health or social care practitioner
  • At least two years post registration experience
  • A degree (or its equivalent) in a subject relevant to health or social care from an approved institution with evidence of recent academic study and/or Continuous Professional Development. If you don’t meet these requirements but have significant relevant professional post registration experience, we will consider your application.
  • You should be working in a relevant clinical role to enable you to integrate theory and practice
  • Those wishing to study at level 7 will normally hold an honours degree (preferably 2:2 or above) in a health-related discipline and have evidence of continuing professional development that shows an ability to study at master’s level. If you don’t meet these requirements but have significant relevant professional post registration experience, we will consider your application

    3Tuition fees

    The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated in the above table for the first Academic Year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK (home) students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase is expected to be in line with inflation.

    For international students, we may increase fees each year, but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation. If you defer your course start date or have to extend your studies beyond the normal duration of the course (e.g. to repeat a year or resit examinations) the University reserves the right to charge you fees at a higher rate and/or in accordance with any legislative changes during the additional period of study.

    4Facilities

    Facilities are subject to availability. Access to some facilities (including some teaching and learning spaces) may vary from those advertised and/or may have reduced availability or restrictions where the university is following public authority guidance, decisions or orders.

    5Placements

    Satisfactory health clearance and enhanced criminal record disclosure is also required. As part of the health clearance checks, you will be required to provide information about your immunity and vaccination status. The information you provide will be used to determine your eligibility to go on placement(s). Placements are provided at the placement provider’s discretion. The University is, therefore, unable to guarantee the provision of placements or the location and type of placement offered.

    Student Contract

    By accepting your offer of a place and enrolling with us, a Student Contract will be formed between you and the university. A copy of the current 2023/2024 contract is available on the website for information purposes however the 2024/25 Contract is currently being updated so please revisit this page before submitting your application. The Contract details your rights and the obligations you will be bound by during your time as a student and contains the obligations that the university will owe to you. You should read the Contract before you accept an offer of a place and before you enrol at the university.
