Successful completion of this course enables you to ‘top-up’ your existing qualifications – an undergraduate level diploma or equivalent in engineering or business-related fields – to the internationally recognised ‘honours degree’ classification. It is designed for UK, international and European students seeking to become managers and leaders in technology-based businesses

Building on your existing engineering or business skills, this final year course aims to introduce you to the key aspects of managing a company in an engineering-based organisation and the latest developments in business management theory, such as strategic management, supply chain and logistics, quality, project management and environmental management.

Why you should study this course

You will have access to commercial software such as Arena⁴.
We try to organise a regular programme of guest speakers (availability and fees may apply), which in recent years has included the Group Strategy Director of Jaguar Land Rover, a NASA Astronaut and a Vice President of Telefonica Europe.
You will be offered free student membership of WES, the Women’s Engineering Society which is an Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity society open to all regardless of gender identity.

What you'll study

The course is structured around a deliberate cluster of modules, which aim to cover some of the most essential modern engineering management activities.

It aims to deepen your knowledge and capabilities in the key areas of quality management, lean manufacturing, operations, communication and information technology, business, policy and strategy, pervasive issues, supply chain management, business simulation and manufacturing process improvement.

Individual Project Proposal - 10 credits

Project - 20 credits

The main aim of the individual project is to give you experience in carrying out a substantial piece of research to a professional standard. Objectives of the exercise give you the opportunity to:

Become an 'expert' in a specialised field of study.
Develop skills and experience in report writing and presentation.
Integrate knowledge gained in different course modules.
Exercise initiative, creativity and imagination.

Business Simulation - 20 credits

This module introduces you to the theory of computer simulation and process modelling, how it is used, tools and techniques for logic modelling for solving of real-life problems. We aim to teach you how to develop a computer simulation model, identify inputs, verification and validation, run experiments for an optimised outcome, and analyse results. You will have the opportunity to use specialist software, and should develop the understanding required to transfer the knowledge to other software, models and contexts.

Manufacturing Process Improvement - 20 credits

As manufacturing companies are continuingly striving to remain competitive in a global market, it is imperative that they have the knowledge to ensure that their processes operate as effectively as possible. We provide you with the opportunity to gain an understanding and knowledge of process improvement approaches, their importance in business performance and application, covering the philosophies, tools, systems and techniques associated with Quality and Lean Management. We place some emphasis on the motor industry because the industry can be considered at the forefront of competitive manufacturing developments.

Project Management - 20 credits

This module introduces you to project management and aims to equip you with skills, both human and technical, to lead and work on a variety of projects. We focus on the importance of project management scheduling skills, quality and estimating standards; you will be encouraged to see the role of the project manager within the broader perspective of strategic business management, to explore where projects come from and why they are selected. We also aim to cover the use of project management software for creating, analysing and monitoring projects, reinforcing the theoretical teaching.

Supply Chain and Logistics Management - 10 credits

This module introduces you to project management and aims to equip you with skills, both human and technical, to lead and work on a variety of projects. We focus on the importance of project management scheduling skills, quality and estimating standards; you will be encouraged to see the role of the project manager within the broader perspective of strategic business management, to explore where projects come from and why they are selected. We also aim to cover the use of project management software like MS Project for creating, analysing and monitoring projects, reinforcing the theoretical teaching.

New Product Development Strategies - 20 credits

This module aims to help you to develop integrated product, technology and manufacturing strategies through appreciation of company-wide, functional issues. We will cover how to identify and appraise business and functional strategic options around new product introduction, so that you have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge to select the most appropriate for the business to enhance performance, productivity and lead to consumer/customer satisfaction.

Compulsory

All modules are mandatory. We regularly review our course content, to make it relevant and current for the benefit of our students. For these reasons, course modules may be updated.

How you'll learn

The course is underpinned by current research in the various specialised fields and newly evolving areas within the disciplines, providing you with the opportunity to explore different ways that effective leadership and management can significantly contribute to wealth creation, competitiveness, and the advancement of society.

We understand that everyone learns differently, so each of our courses will consist of structured teaching sessions, which may include:

You will be expected to undertake significant self-directed study each week, at least 17 hours, depending on the demands of individual modules. The number of contact hours may vary from semester to semester, however, on average, it is likely to be around 15 contact hours per week.

As an innovative and enterprising institution, the university may seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), the university may deliver certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods.

Assessment

This course will be assessed by coursework and exams.

Entry requirements

Typical offer for 2024/25 entry.

Pass in Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degree, or equivalent of a pass to year 2 from a degree in an engineering or business-related subject.

5 GCSEs at grade 4 / C or above to include English and Mathematics.

IELTS: 6.0 overall, with no component lower than 5.5.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessments, facilities and support services. There may be additional costs not covered by this fee such as accommodation and living costs, recommended reading books, stationery, printing and re-assessments should you need them. The rights of Irish residents to study in the UK are preserved under the Common Travel Area arrangement. If you are an Irish student and meet the residency criteria, you can study in England, pay the same level of tuition fees as English students and utilise the Tuition Fee Loan.

**EU Support Bursary

Following the UK's exit from the European Union, we are offering financial support to all eligible EU students who wish to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree with us full-time. This bursary will be used to offset the cost of your tuition fees to bring them in line with that of UK students. Students studying a degree with a foundation year with us are not eligible for the bursary.

How do you know if you need to pay UK or international tuition fees?

We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Your fee status determines your tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available to you. The rules about who pays UK (home) or international (overseas) fees for higher education courses in England are set by the government's Department for Education. The regulations identify all the different categories of student who can insist on paying the home rate. The regulations can be difficult to understand, so the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) has provided fee status guidance to help you identify whether you are eligible to pay the home or overseas rate.

If you meet all the criteria required by any one category, including any residence requirements, your institution must charge you the home rate. You only need to find one category that you fit into.

³Tuition fees

The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated in the above table for the first Academic Year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK (home) students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase is expected to be in line with inflation.

For international students, we may increase fees each year, but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation. If you defer your course start date or have to extend your studies beyond the normal duration of the course (e.g. to repeat a year or resit examinations) the University reserves the right to charge you fees at a higher rate and/or in accordance with any legislative changes during the additional period of study.

Student Contract

By accepting your offer of a place and enrolling with us, a Student Contract will be formed between you and the university.
