The course aims to prepare students to become effective teachers, managers or leaders in a variety of educational settings e.g. state and private higher education institutions, colleges and schools, as well as language academies, testing centres, consultancies or governmental agencies.

TKT Teaching Young Learners
The course prepares students for the TKT Teaching Young Learners, a professional qualification accredited by Cambridge Assessment1.
What you'll study
On this one year top-up course you will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in a range of different fields including: language/linguistics; literature; teaching English; and education management.
We regularly review our course content, to make it relevant and current for the benefit of our students. For these reasons, course modules may be updated.
How you'll learn
The course teaching and learning strategy reflects the four key underpinning values:

Learning activities represent authentic, real-world tasks. The TKT* is embedded in the course. - Social
Students interact regularly with staff and peers, often working together in small groups. - Inclusive
Teaching and learning are designed to be inclusive and accessible to all.
Teaching and learning methods across the course as a whole include lectures, seminars, workshops, and tutorials as well as study trips* devoted to experiential learning, online working and research, self-directed study and group/collaborative work.
Inquiry-based learning is central to the delivery of the modules, comprising this course. Perhaps this is most obviously demonstrated in the Careers Development Project module where you have the opportunity to choose your own subjects for investigation and, using a wide-range of primary and secondary materials, offer their own analysis of the evidence.
Teaching contact hours
The number of full-time contact hours may vary from semester to semester, however, on average, it is likely to be around 12 contact hours per week in the first semester and around 9 hours per week in the second semester.
Additionally, you will be expected to undertake significant self-directed study of approximately 35 hours each week, depending on the demands of individual modules.
The contact hours may be made up of a combination of face-to-face teaching, individual and group tutorials, and online classes and tutorials.
As an innovative and enterprising institution, the university may seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), the university may deliver certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods.
Since COVID-19, we have delivered our courses in a variety of forms, in line with public authority guidance, decisions, or orders and we will continue to adapt our delivery as appropriate. Whether on campus or online, our key priority is staff and student safety.

**EU Support Bursary
Following the UK's exit from the European Union, we are offering financial support to all eligible EU students who wish to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree with us full-time. This bursary will be used to offset the cost of your tuition fees to bring them in line with that of UK students. Students studying a degree with a foundation year with us are not eligible for the bursary.

Confucius Institute
The School of Humanities is home to the Confucius Institute. This is a collaboration created through a partnership with Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, which aims to promote an understanding of the Chinese language and culture.

The course has been designed for learners who aim to enhance their knowledge of English while at the same time engage with education management and English teaching and assessment themes with the purpose of either obtaining better employment or becoming more effective managers in education settings
On successful completion you will be able to:
- critically analyse modern literary works from a variety of global contexts
- critically evaluate and apply the principles underlying the teaching, learning and testing process with a focus on effective classroom management
- problem solve around different education management scenarios in different contexts
- deploy a range of intercultural competencies and recognise how language underpins intercultural interactions and transactions
- apply advanced communication skills, both written and oral, in various social, academic and professional contexts, and across various landscapes including in person, on paper and online
- be an independent, critical researcher who is able to effectively navigate and interpret information, make use of evidence, and communicate findings
- meet deadlines and challenges with resilience and confidence in order to perform successfully in a range of post-graduate roles.
Job destinations could include civil service roles, International Recruitment Officers, Language Centre Directors, English Examiners, University Lecturers, School Teachers, Academic Consultants and Course Leaders and a wide range of academic leadership roles.
Where our graduates work
This is a new course, however, graduate from the associated suite of English courses have gone on to a variety of destinations: e.g. Head teacher for English in a local school, Civil Servant, Materials Designer, Test Designer, Centre for Academic Writer tutor, Course Director Pre-sessional English Courses.
Further study
Students on this course can progress to the English and Education Management MA, which has similar content, or could elect to read for the English Literature MA or the English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics MA.
Graduate Immigration Route visa
Based on current information from the UK Government, international students whose study extends beyond summer 2021 may be eligible for a visa under the UK Government’s Graduate Immigration Route, which will enable students to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK at any skill level for up to two (2) years.
