8 tips for writing the perfect personal statement
A personal statement gives you the opportunity to write down all your achievements, passions, strengths and aspirations for the future. We also recognise that you might need a personal statement for a variety of other reasons such as applying for a job, an apprenticeship or a professional placement, and not just when applying to higher education.
Here’s some advice that may help you create a personal statement that really stands out from the rest.
1
Don’t start with: Hi, my name is…
It’s much better to start with something that is interesting and different. For example; your ambitions, your passion for your area of study, the age you were when you became interested in the topic.
2
Why do you want to study this particular course?
Why you? Do you need to have certain personality traits in order to do that course? Make sure you fit the bill. Don't be afraid to sound confident, but be careful not to sound arrogant.
3
Tell them why you’re a suitable candidate.
What skills/qualifications do you have? A great thing is to show off work experiences and any volunteering undertaken. If they'll help you progress in your career/course, you're onto a winner.
4
Keep that personal touch.
Be yourself, be authentic and genuine as that is what will make your statement unique and stand out from the crowd.
5
Don’t just focus on the academic stuff.
We want to get to know the person behind the statement. What are your key hobbies and passions? Remember to keep it relevant.
6
Make sure it's linear and understandable, make sure it flows.
Your statement can be a maximum of 47 lines/4000 characters. It may seem like a lot at first, however, it is just over a page of information to include.
7
Check it out.
Don’t underestimate the power of a proof-read. This doesn’t just go for spelling errors – check your statement for sentence structure, repetition, grammar and repetition too.
8
Think it’s ready?
When you think it’s as polished as you can possibly make it, run it past your tutor, a friend or a colleague. Now you can press send – good luck!
