The Coventry University Group is making a further investment in the healthcare education sector with the launch of a new course that will enhance the transformation of CU London’s former Civic Centre base to include a new health hub.
The Group is training thousands of nurses, paramedics and healthcare professionals during this global pandemic and preparing them to join the fight against COVID-19. CU London’s Dagenham campus and the grade II listed former council building has undergone a £4.5 million renovation to ensure it meets the needs of all students.
It has now been approved to provide the Independent and Supplementary Prescribing (ISP) course for eligible healthcare professionals, with the new starters welcomed this autumn.
CU London follows CU Scarborough as the latest Coventry University Group campus to offer the provision, with hundreds of healthcare professionals already successfully completing the course and becoming Independent Prescribers in clinical practice at the Coventry campus.
Andy Ginn, CU London Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor, is delighted to add the course to their offering and is pleased the Art Deco Civic Centre building, that was originally designed by architect E. Berry Webber and constructed in 1936 as part of a major civic development programme in London during the inter-war years, will finally be used for health education purposes.
I'm particularly proud to see this initiative taking off in Barking and Dagenham. Not only are we fortunate to be surrounded by excellent healthcare trusts delivering across East London and beyond, but we're also reinterpreting the former Civic Centre's history as being originally designed for potential use as a hospital and adapting this vision for modern times.
Andy Ginn, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor at CU London
Healthcare professionals wishing to gain new and updated skills can now do so thanks to the excellent work of our colleagues in the Health and Life Sciences Faculty as the university expands this successful provision into areas where there is clearly a demand for a new course.
CU London will work with local NHS Trust partners to deliver the ISP through the Dagenham campus and continue to support the provision of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for healthcare staff locally.
Alison Bardsley, Associate Professor for Non-Medical Prescribing and Nursing Degree End Point Assessment for the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, at Coventry University, hopes this will pave the way to further collaboration and educational opportunities.
The course attracts healthcare professionals from all over the UK and we hope that provision through the Dagenham campus will support healthcare professionals to access this qualification nearer to home if they require. We hope this will pave the way to further collaboration and educational opportunities with the possibility of provision of Health Assessment modules.

This is echoed by the Trust.
We are delighted that our first cohort of staff has commenced their Non-Medical Prescribing course at Coventry University. The university offers a very flexible programme which is locally based and we are pleased to be working in partnership with them to ensure our staff become safe and confident prescribers.
