CU Scarborough is excited to be hosting its first Health Conference from 19 to 21 October 2022

Are you currently at school or college and thinking about higher education study in the Health and Social Care sector? Or are you currently working and wanting to enhance your career? Never been to a Health Conference before? Why not take the opportunity to join us at our first Health Conference from 19 to 21 October?

CU Scarborough has been working on a project ‘Improving Graduate Outcomes in Health & Social Care on the North Yorkshire Coast’, funded by the Office for Students. Over the last three years, the project has included raising aspirations and creating new pathways and employment opportunities in the Health & Social Care Sector along the North Yorkshire Coast. As a celebration of the success of the project, CU Scarborough is hosting its first Health Conference and would like to invite those who are interested in going on to further education or work in the Health or Social Care sector.

We have invited a selection of guest experts who will be covering some key topics from the industry. This will provide you with an insight into the different job roles within Health & Social care, give attendees an opportunity to find out about projects, research and also to network with local organisations and find out about possible volunteer and career opportunities.

What is on offer at CU Scarborough's Health Conference?

Each day has its own theme and you can choose which one you prefer to attend:

Wednesday 19th October - Health & Wellbeing
Thursday 20th October - Mental Health
Friday 21st October - Health & Social Care

Each day will be filled with key note speakers, breakout room sessions & networking opportunities. We have invited guest speakers for each day and provided spaces for breakout room sessions & networking opportunities.

It’s your opportunity to enrich and get a taste of the real world of our local health and social care heroes. Organisations and key note speakers will be diving deeper into key industry topics and will be also sharing recent research. You will have the chance to learn, share your thoughts and discuss during the networking and breakout room sessions. It will be a great enrichment opportunity and a taster into what local health and social care organisations do.

Attending the conference, which will be a great addition to your CV and will boost your knowledge and experience, you will also be able to find out what CU Scarborough has to offer: we have a range of pathways on offer for many health courses.

Keynote Speakers

Jamie Peacock

Jamie Peacock has played over 550 times over 19 seasons including 49 caps for his country which he captained for 8 years. At the end of his career, in 2015 he had become the most decorated player of the modern Super League era winning a total of 9 Grand Finals, 4 Challenge Cup Finals, 4 World Club Challenges as well as being selected for the Super League Dream Team 11 times, the World 13 twice, Worlds’ Best Forward twice and in 2011 he was recognised for his services to the game and awarded an MBE.

As well as working in a commercial for the Leeds Rhinos and for the BBC, Jamie now runs a number of successful different enterprises ranging from Health & Wellbeing programs for students, a motivational talk entitled Champion Teams in which he covers 12 aspects in 3 areas of Self-Performance, Leadership and Team Collective that enable a team to become champions and finally, he runs a Building Champions mentoring program that drives high-performance and builds strong, lasting leadership habits, companies to have used this program including HSBC, NHS, McDonald's, The o2 and Sky Bet.

He is also now a keen endurance runner, having completed 4 Marathons and 2 Ultra Marathons the furthest being a 52 mile double Marathon around London. All of these have been completed to raise money for a number of different charities including MND, GreenHouse Sports Project and Sue Ryder Hospices, with over £150,000 being raised and the latest achievement is a 100 mile London run.

He will be running an interactive Wellbeing session looking at the 4 pillars that are fundamental to Wellbeing:

Going through information and tips to build strong habits in the 4 pillars

John McAvoy

John McAvoy is currently a Nike athlete, however, previously, he was a high profile armed robber who found redemption through the power of sport. Having broken both British and World records whilst in prison he is now forging a new life as an endurance athlete and speaker who is committed to using his story of rehabilitation to help and inspire others to change their lives for the better.

Mike Padgham

With 33 years in social care, Mike Padgham is an entrepreneur and a leading and influential figure in a sector which looks after our oldest and most vulnerable residents.
Mike is managing director of the growing, family-owned and award-winning Saint Cecilia’s Care Group, which owns three care homes, two nursing homes and a daycare centre in North Yorkshire.

Mike began his social care business from scratch 33 years ago and since then has delivered residential, domiciliary and daycare to many hundreds of people and provided employment for a sizeable number too. He continues to grow the business, having added a nursing home to Saint Cecilia’s line-up earlier this year.

Despite the current economic climate – with many providers consolidating or reducing their stock – Mike has bucked the trend, deciding that the future of the care sector is strong and that by boldly investing now he can strengthen the company’s position as a leading local provider.

This commitment to building his business amply demonstrates a range of skills including strategic thinking, vision, entrepreneurial flair and motivation, that he would bring to the Board.

Since 2001 Mike has been chair of the Independent Care Group a representative body for care providers in York and North Yorkshire. He has taken the group way beyond its regional role to become a national voice for social care, campaigning to get a fairer deal for the sector.

Mike is an unflagging champion for social care, prepared to speak out, when others might shy away, gaining vital media coverage, including prime-time news bulletins.
Mike is also immediate past Chair of the Homecare Association (previously the United Kingdom Homecare Association. He led it through a period of change and restructuring, strengthening it, growing its membership and raising its profile. It is now the foremost voice for home care in the UK.

Mike is a former non-executive director of Care England and is on the York Health and Wellbeing Board, the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Adults Board and the North Yorkshire Strategic Partnership. Mike also holds non-executive director posts in several different companies.

Over the past two years, Mike has been a leading spokesman on the impact Covid-19 is having on the social care sector. He has responded to and answered hundreds of press requests providing television, radio and newspaper pieces for local, regional, national and international media.

Aside from running his own business and chairing care organisations, Mike has a strong record in supporting regional investment.

Mike was a founder of Scarborough Economic Action Ltd a business pressure group set up to encourage inward investment into Scarborough and the east coast, which ultimately led to Scarborough being made a Renaissance Town.

He also managed Whitby Task Force, an action group similarly set up to regenerate a town that has some of the highest unemployment in the country, a fact ultimately recognised through Whitby getting European funding assistance.

In all his roles, Mike always adopts a can-do attitude, working hard in everything he does to achieve whatever aims and outcomes the business or organisation is pursuing.

Tommy Whitelaw

Tommy Whitelaw Tommy engages with health and social care professionals and students to encourage them to make a personal pledge to make a difference in the lives of people and their careers.
He travels across the country visiting care homes, hospitals, universities and colleges, taking the key messages of the Carer Voices ‘You can make a Difference’ campaign and sharing the Chief Nursing Officer for Scotland’s key messages through his talks.

Marius Barnard

Marius Barnard is a Senior Practitioner Executive Coach, (EMCC Global) currently coaching and training leaders and their teams to perform at their peak, manage stress and build better relationships. He applies a variety of methodologies including Positive Intelligence where individuals strive for greater potential through managing their limiters (saboteurs) to create behavioural and thought pattern change.

As an ATP & LTA qualified coach he has been working with athletes for 19 years including Wimbledon players. In his 2nd year as Racquets Manager at Next Generation Clubs he won the national NRG Racquets Department of the year award after smashing budget. Preceding his coaching career, Marius beat six world number ones (including Rodger Federer, Andy Roddick, and Goran Ivanisevic), reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and won six career titles in doubles.

Marius completed a degree in Business Psychology and Business Management whilst playing on the ATP Tour.
