Secretary of State for Education visits CU Scarborough

The Secretary of State for Education has visited Scarborough to discuss a £1.6 million investment which will support young people and their families living on the North Yorkshire Coast. 

Damian Hinds visited CU Scarborough to meet with the North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area, which is based at the campus and looks to improve opportunity and social mobility for children and young people in Scarborough, Whitby and Filey, through a focus on education.

He was welcomed by Kay Fraser, Acting Associate Pro Vice Chancellor of CU Scarborough, as well as other members of the North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area board.

The group discussed the investment and how it will help disadvantaged parents in the area receive support with early speech and language development and also fund extra-curricular activities for young people across the area.

Damian also met with local teachers and a number of young carers to get their views on education issues in the area.

The MP was given a tour of CU Scarborough, part of the Coventry University Group, and told more about its growth since its opening in the town in 2015.

He also heard more about the wide variety of courses on offer at the new £14 million campus, including the launch of its BSc Adult Nursing degree which will seenursing training return to the town for the first time in 23 years, as well as CU Scarborough’s commitment to improving social mobility across the area.
