On 26th July, Coventry University London hosted the inaugural Global Energy Summit (GES). This event was organised by academic members of staff supported by a team of student volunteers. GES was a one-day summit covering trends and topics within the oil, gas and energy industry.
The event was open to staff, students, and members of the public, with a number of energy industry professionals, academics, government officials and non-profit organisations in attendance. The day offered an excellent opportunity for networking and knowledge-sharing, with exposure to insights and current trends within the industry, in addition to strategies for dealing current issues with oil, gas and energy and the latest developments in international energy policies
During the day, panel and forum discussions were held, enabling conversation about the current global energy issues. Topics that were covered in particular during the event included present challenges with oil prices, challenges for new oil production, renewable energy, and developments within the energy sector in Africa. The present energy needs in Africa, the issues of energy access with the increasing presence of Chinese interests in the industry, and the impact of multinational energy projects were some of the key developments concerning Africa that were debated. The renewable energy sector was also represented by discussions related to the importance of new technologies applied to generate clean energy and the effects of climate change.
Global Financial Services MBA student Fatemeh Mokhtari, who was responsible for marketing of the event, said:
“We had a great turnout from industry professionals, government authorities and guests, accompanied with great discussions and presentations. Given it was our first time, I believe it went well, and it was a pleasure working amongst such a professional group of people organising the event.”
Given the success of the Global Energy Summit, Coventry University London hopes to host the event again in the future.
