A new secure cycle hub has been officially opened by the university and Councillor Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services and Councillor Jim O’Boyle.

It will provide high quality, secure parking for 24 bikes outside The Hub building on Jordan Well to promote sustainable travel for staff and students at the university. This is in addition to over 1,300 bicycle parking spaces that are already on campus, more than 100 of which are located around The Hub.

The facilities were funded as part of the Early Measures Air Quality project with Coventry City Council. The government grant is awarded to projects which provide air quality benefits and develop solutions over the longer term by increasing awareness and encouraging behaviour change. Coventry University has a commitment to providing high quality cycling facilities on campus for staff and students and increasing the proportion of staff and students who cycle to Coventry University.

Coventry University’s Sustainable Travel Plan sets out the ambition to support active travel to the city centre campus. The university is working closely with the city council to identify actions to improve air quality in the city and encourage both students and staff to use sustainable transport to and around campus. This has included the creation of a bicycle user group, improvements to bicycle parking facilities, access to the cycle to work scheme, free bicycle maintenance and Brompton bicycles for staff to borrow to travel across campus.

Andrew Turner, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) and Professor Guy Daly, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) were on hand to open the cycle hub and cut the ribbon with Cllr Patricia Hetherton and Cllr Jim O’Boyle.

We are committed to encouraging our staff and students to cycle to work and across campus. This new cycle hub offers peace of mind for cyclists on campus that they have a safe, secure place to store their bicycles.

We will continue to act to support cyclists in a number of ways to make it easier to cycle to campus and welcome the support of Coventry City Council in achieving this.

Andrew Turner, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning)

We want to encourage people out of their cars and having secure cycle parking is something we know cyclists want.

I’m particularly pleased to see that Coventry University remains committed to encouraging staff and students to ditch their cars and cycle instead. By encouraging cycling to and from university, as well as around campus, we’ll hopefully encourage the younger generation to choose a more sustainable way to travel.

Cllr Patricia Hetherton, Coventry City Council
