Coventry University has been shortlisted for UK University of the Year in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.

The university, which has campuses in Coventry, London, Scarborough and Wroclaw in Poland, is one of the largest providers of undergraduate education in the UK and is committed to a relentless focus on excellent teaching, student experience and innovation.

Oxford University won University of the Year, with Queen Mary University as runner-up, while Bath, Strathclyde and Coventry - the only modern university among the finalists - completed the shortlist.

Coventry University has this year reconfirmed its strong record in our league table, where it is consistently in the top two or three modern universities. It has expanded sites across the UK from London to Scarborough while maintaining excellent levels of student satisfaction. Its achievements in our league table are matched by strong performance across our measures of social inclusion - a balance few universities attain. This is not the first time we have recognised Coventry in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, it has won our Modern University of the Year award three times, and was named University of the Year for Student Experience in 2018.

I am delighted that we have been shortlisted for UK University of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021, and have also moved up in the rankings. This is in recognition of the huge strides we have made in our journey to delivering quality teaching and learning and outstanding student satisfaction. As a modern university with a global outlook, we have led the way in the provision of digital learning, underpinned by the adoption of innovative technologies, including being home to the UK’s first Standalone 5G network.

In the overall rankings, Coventry University moved up four places to joint 46th in the UK and was ranked 5th in the West Midlands ahead of Birmingham City, Keele, Worcester, Newman, and Wolverhampton universities.

The university has enhanced its widely recognised capacity to deliver online education by introducing a new innovative digital learning platform across all its courses from this month, following a successful pilot project.

Aula offers a mobile-first, virtual environment designed to look and feel like a social media platform, which enhances and strengthens the way the university continues to deliver teaching and learning, whether this is digital, face-to-face or a blend of both.

Vodafone’s Standalone 5G network on our Coventry campus is enabling lecturers in Health and Life Sciences to push the boundaries of VR teaching.

The new edition of the Good University Guide also reveals the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic will have on student life. Universities across the UK have made changes to adapt to the new circumstances, with lectures moving online and reduced amounts of face-to-face contact time.

Coventry University has worked closely with public health officials and other outside organisations and put numerous safety measures in place to make its campuses as safe as possible for staff, students and the communities in which they are located.

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 provides rankings for UK universities and a comprehensive overview of higher education in Britain. It includes profiles on 135 universities and UK university rankings, making use of the latest data published in the past two months.
