How can teacher training and CPD solve the staff retention crisis?

As the education sector continues to recover from its two-year battle with Covid-19, the strength and resilience of teachers has never been so important. Yet finding – and keeping – good teachers is becoming increasingly challenging.

Join us for our upcoming free webinar on Wednesday 11 May, which we will be hosting in partnership with Tes. In the webinar, Tes editor Jon Severs will speak to a panel of ITT experts, including Professor Geraint Jones, Executive Director at the National Institute of Teaching and Education, to look at how improved teacher training can help tackle the retention crisis in schools.

According to DfE pupil projections, the number of pupils is set to grow by 20% over the next decade. However, its latest workforce data shows that new entrants to the profession declined by 4% in latest government statistics and a record number are leaving the profession after just one year.

The Government has come forward with measures – including the Levelling Up White Paper, which proposes to offer retention payments to help schools in new ‘Education Investment areas’ keep the best teachers in the highest-priority subjects; and to look overseas in its iQTS pilot.

However, can the training offered to new recruits better prepare teachers for the classroom and therefore improve teacher retention levels?

The expert panel will be:

  • Ian Hunter, Director Tes Institute, Tes Professor
  • Geraint Jones, founding Executive Director & Associate-Pro-Vice-Chancellor, National Institute of Teaching and Education
  • Emma Hollis, Executive Director, National Association at School Based Teacher Trainers (NASBTT)
  • Jack Worth, lead Economist, National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER)
