Coventry University will be welcoming the country’s best up and coming broadcasting talent to an awards ceremony in the city later this month.

The University is hosting the Broadcast Journalism Training Council’s (BJTC) annual awards at the St Mary’s Guildhall in Coventry on Wednesday 27 November 2013. BBC Political Correspondent Chris Mason will be presenting the awards.

The BJTC is a partnership of UK broadcasters which regulates and sets the benchmark for journalism courses across the country. The awards celebrate the best work of students at courses which are recognised by the council.

Coventry University’s Journalism and Media degree, which is professionally accredited by the BJTC, is hosting the event after one of its graduates, Natasha Da Silva, won the ‘Journalist of the Year’ title and ‘Best Documentary’ prize last year.

Natasha’s win came less than a year after the innovative multi-media journalism degree received its BJTC accreditation and its role as host for this year’s awards ceremony is further evidence of its growing reputation within journalistic circles.

Rachel Matthews, principal lecturer and Course Director for Journalism at Coventry University, said:

We’re looking forward to welcoming the Broadcast Journalism Training Council to Coventry in November.
The BJTC’s presence here clearly illustrates that the journalism profession is taking notice of what we’re doing. We produced last year’s winner of course - and that success came not long after receiving our BJTC accreditation – while another of our students won the Motor Sport Association’s Young Journalist of the Year Award in 2012.

These successes are testimony both to the talents of our students and to the quality of journalism teaching that that we provide.

The Journalism and Media degree at Coventry University is committed to producing critical journalists, capable of creating sustainable careers in today’s fast-moving media landscapes. It does this by working in partnership with industry to run live projects in the city and beyond.

The Broadcast Journalism Training Council’s annual awards take place at the St Mary’s Guildhall in Coventry at 12pm on Wednesday 27 November 2013.
