Green-fingered locals are being invited to come along to Coventry University on Tuesday to learn about how to use their garden to grow a range of edible foods.
The Green@CU event is part of the University’s ongoing sustainability initiatives, and is being held to promote and encourage the take-up of environmentally-friendly practices throughout the campus and the city.
Coventry University’s environment team will be on hand to show how allotments on the campus are being used not just to grow flowers, but also a diverse mix of nutritious vegetation. Anyone can come along and learn the best and easiest way to produce lots of cheap and healthy food, from a pot on the window sill to a patch in the garden.
Other activities and exhibits include an ethical market showing off clothing and home designs from local suppliers, a ‘Doctor Bike’ stall which will service cycles free of charge and the demonstration of a new game developed by the University’s Serious Games Institute to help students reduce their carbon footprint.
Severn Trent have also sponsored and will be judging a photography competition in which Coventry students have the opportunity to win £300 for taking a photograph based around a ‘nature’ theme. The successful student will have their picture hung in the award-winning Severn Trent building in the city.
Selina Fletcher, environmental sustainability officer at Coventry University, said:
Our aim for this year’s event is to help students, staff and locals understand the benefits of eco-friendly practices through a wider range of activities. We’ve got a lot of things on show for people to explore, which will make for a fun and interactive day and will hopefully provide some inspiration for greener living.
The Green@CU event will be taking place in and around The Hub from 10am – 4pm on Tuesday 21st February.
