Coventry University invites artists to apply for residency scheme
Coventry University’s School of Art and Design is offering practising artists free access to its studio spaces and facilities as part of a national residency programme.
Artists Access to Art Colleges (AA2A) is a nationwide scheme run in conjunction with art colleges across the country in which the participating institutions allow artists use of their amenities to pursue their creative ideas, undertake research or develop a project. Financial support may also be available as part of the programme.
Coventry University’s School of Art and Design is one of 22 institutions hosting the AA2A scheme this year, which runs from 6 Oct 2014 to 30 April 2015. Up to four places are available on the programme, which is open to all artists - including recent graduates - who can demonstrate that they have at least one year’s professional practice.
In return for free access to space and equipment, which at Coventry University includes printmaking facilities, a jewellery workshop, creative software and filmmaking kit, artists are expected to engage with students through practical workshops, demonstrations, presentations and question and answer sessions.
The AA2A programme therefore benefits participants and institutions alike with resident artists having the opportunity to use equipment which otherwise might not be available but also passing on their knowledge and experience so that students can learn from them during their placement.
Local artist Sarah Hedley completed her AA2A residency at Coventry University in April this year. She said:
I’ve really benefitted from taking part in the AA2A scheme. I’ve had the use of a studio space, which was very good for the large artwork I was doing at the time and I’ve also been tutoring students, giving talks and providing demonstrations.
I would definitely recommend this kind of commitment to an art school setting for those wanting to be part of a rigorous environment where they will be challenged to contribute and also get some inspiration for their own work.
Further information on how to apply for the scheme is available at www.aa2a.org/apply with application packs available direct from Coventry School of Art and Design. Those interested should contact the School’s AA2A administrator Mandy Bisla on +44 (0)24 7688 7020 / 8248 or via email mandy.bisla@coventry.ac.uk.
The closing date for receipt of applications is Monday 8 September 2014 with all applicants being informed of the outcome by Friday 12 September 2014.
