Filming ‘Black Hill’ in Spain

Media production students from Coventry University will be showing off their final projects at a prestigious event at the home of the British film, BAFTA head quarters in London, next month.
The film showing – taking place on 7th June - has been organised by students and lecturers at the University. Showcasing the exceptionally high standard of work produced this year, this is an opportunity for students to exhibit the professional, technical and creative skills used to produce their work – articulating the diversity of their voices and experiences in both fictional and non-fictional video work.

Industry professional will be attending the showings and awards will be given out on the night for Best Film, Best Documentary, and the Rising Phoenix award for Best Director. The judges include BAFTA winning writer, director and Coventry University alumni Debbie Isitt and BBC Producer Jon Plowman.

Taking their work to the heart of the British film industry, the projects on display include:

  • ‘Latitude’, the first feature film produced by the University, which follows the lives of two gadget fanatics whose love of ‘geocaching’ leads them into a high-tech game of cat and mouse across America;
  • ‘Behind the monastery walls‘, which looks at the lives of monks and nuns in Romanian monasteries;
  • ‘The Deutchish feeling‘, focussing on the lives of a Turkish community living in Berlin;
  • ‘Black Hill’, a short film about the American Civil war that was shot in Spain on a RED digital cinematography camera;
  • Ping', which tells the tale of a guy who is searching for the love of his life and turns to speed dating.

Stephen Dawkins, senior lecturer in video at Coventry University, said:

This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to show off their work and gain exposure to film and tv industry professionals. They have worked hard this year to make their work stand out, with many travelling as far as China, Iceland, Spain, Italy and America for the filming of their documentaries and fiction-films. Given the tremendous effort that has been put into these projects, it is great to be able to celebrate them at the home of British film.

Media production student Mike Peace said:

This event is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our talent and celebrate all that we have achieved over the past three years. We hope that presenting our work to industry experts will be a launch pad for our future careers.

Coventry University will also be launching an interactive multimedia catalogue following the screening that will be available for anyone to download from sites such as the Apple store. This innovative digital book will be made using Abode publishing software and Coventry is one of only two universities with the rights to do this in the UK.

The media production projects will also be on show as part of the University’s Degree Show on 1st June in the Graham Sutherland building, Cox Street, Coventry.
