The first artist impression of the new £73m Bishop Gate student accommodation development has been released by Coventry University and Barberry Developments.

A planning application has been submitted to Coventry City Council by the two organisations, with a view to transforming the former Royal Mail sorting office into high-quality accommodation for over a thousand students.

Demolition of the old building is nearing completion and the site is being cleared ready for construction to begin once the planning application is approved.

The plans will be showcased by Coventry and Warwickshire at MIPIM – the world’s largest commercial property show – in France in March.

Rob Talliss, director of estates development at Coventry University, said:

“We’re very much looking forward to seeing the new building taking shape as we progress this development in a part of the city that has not seen a great deal of investment in recent years.

“We remain very aware of the concerns of the people of Coventry, but are keen to reassure that the long-term benefit of the city is at the heart of this development. More specifically, we anticipate that by locating our students into this new development we can make significant steps towards reducing the numbers moving into housing in the city."
