A Coventry University Music Performance student will be taking to the stage in May to perform an evening of gypsy jazz at the lively music venue Taylor John's House in Coventry.

Tommy Loose, 25, from Wisbech in Cambridgeshire, has spent the past year teaching himself how to play gypsy jazz style guitar and arrange music. Playing as part of a quartet All of the Right Notes, he will be accompanied by his father Roger, filling the role of violin; head of Ensembles Chris Evans will be covering bass duties, and fellow student Pete Hurst takes second guitar.

Gypsy jazz is a genre that many people will have probably heard but not realised – most likely in films and adverts. It is also known as gypsy swing or hot club jazz, and is often said to have been started by guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt in the 1930s.

Tommy will be using authentic Maccaferri guitars to play and the venue will be decorated in art deco attire, with buffet, music and cabaret layout all aiming to complement the era and the event.

In addition to playing guitar, Tommy is one of only a few harp guitar players in the county and has enjoyed several visits to schools to perform. The Gypsy Jazz project will also be continuing after his Degree Show performance and the group already has four bookings over the next few months.

Tommy will be performing on Saturday 19th May 2012 at Taylor John's House, Coventry Canal Basin. Tickets are £3 and all profits from the night will go to Diabetes UK – a topic close to his heart as his daughter is a Type 1 diabetic.
