A member of Coventry University’s teaching staff is in contention for a prestigious national nursing award.

Sue Creswell, a lecturer in adult nursing, has been nominated for the title of Lecturer of the Year at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2014. Sue is one of nine nominees from universities across the country in the running for the title. She will find out if she is the winner at a special awards ceremony taking place at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Thursday 1 May.

The awards are run by Nursing Times, the leading weekly magazine for nurses in the United Kingdom, and celebrate the achievements of the student nurses and educational establishments who are guiding and shaping the future of the profession.

Sue, who hails from Coventry, has worked in nursing for almost 30 years and spent 24 years at the city’s hospital before commencing full-time teaching in 2009.  Initially seconded to teach clinical skills back in 2005, Sue now delivers more theoretical subjects, leading a module in complex care and contributing to other modules including communication skills and health promotion.  But her clinical experience as a staff and ward sister, combined with her extensive knowledge of how to support learning, has been of tremendous benefit to the many students who have come under her charge.

Sue has been nominated by colleagues at Coventry University on the basis of her outstanding pass rates for students, her dedication and determination to enhancing learning opportunities, and for her compassion and commitment to supporting student nurses in their journey towards registration.

Speaking ahead of this week’s awards ceremony, Sue said:

I’m flattered to have been nominated for such a high profile award. I must admit it’s come as something of a surprise but a very pleasant one at that and I’m delighted to have made the final shortlist.

It’s an honour to be recognised and appreciated by fellow professionals but I’d like to pay tribute my colleagues and students at Coventry University. They are as much an inspiration to me as I am to them and their dedication and commitment is helping to enhance our reputation as a leading provider in nursing education.
