As part of the SPECTRUM 2012 performing arts festival, Coventry University student Emily Bird‘s short film showing us how a simple car trip can turn into a nightmare will be screened in the city during May.

Emily, 21, from Warwick was inspired to create ‘Turned’ from watching films such as ‘Joy Ride’ and ‘Duel’. Having always been a fan of thrillers, she was keen to create a film in this genre and wanted to play with the idea of people being vulnerable in their cars.

Media Production student Emily said:

“I wanted to play off driver’s fears, such as breaking down in the middle of nowhere, and having no signal on your phone. Being a driver myself, I wanted to incorporate my personal experiences within this short film, such as getting lost, as well as making a situation into a life or death scenario.”

Emily has previously worked with companies such as Jaguar Land Rover – creating two promotional videos for their Apprenticeship Programmes – and Geotech, working on videos highlighting their new products. She has also created promotional music videos for her band ‘Phase One Steel Orchestra’.

SPECTRUM 2012 is Coventry University’s annual festival that celebrates the huge diversity of imagination and talent of its final year students. Emily’s film will be shown at the Graham Sutherland Building in Coventry on 1st June 2012, as well as at the BAFTA headquarters in June as part of their Media Production Degree Show.
