Our new interactive Wordtree visualises BAWE concordance lines in tree-like branching structures. Using the Wordtree you can search the entire BAWE corpus, or filter for specific disciplines, genre families, or writer first languages.
It takes some skill to interpret concordance lines effectively, and novice concordance users often tend to scan lines horizontally for meaning rather than vertically for lexico-grammatical patterns. The Wordtree structure reduces the amount of text on screen and makes patterns more immediately apparent.
Our Wordtree was developed with funding from JISC. It was initially designed by Conail Stewart, and subsequently by Paul Stephenson. We are now working on ways to reverse the tree so that it also branches to the left of the key word.
