We are looking for three volunteers, who would like to gain valuable on-the-job experience, while contributing to our work in Human Security.
About us
The Centre for Social Relations is an applied research centre with an interest in the study of diverse societies. We explore how diversity can bring challenges and opportunities to people, communities and societies. Our team come from a variety of disciplines, including social psychology, sociology, political studies, economics and philosophy and we work on different national and international research projects.
The Centre also contributes to the University’s Grand Challenge Initiative in Human Security. Human Security at Coventry University focuses on the concerns and vulnerabilities of people in their everyday lives. It addresses insecurities resulting from a range of threats, such as disease, environmental hazards, hunger, unemployment, crime, war, social conflict, political repression and discrimination, as well as the changing nature of social interactions where we work and live.
About you
You will be an enthusiastic motivated student or recent graduate with an interest in human security, international relations, or diversity. You will commit to stay with us for at least 6 weeks. In return, you will have the opportunity to build your own professional portfolio in a friendly and encouraging environment, and develop links with national and international academic institutions, as well as government and non-governmental organisations. You don’t need any prior experience – we’ll train you once you start with us.
About the roles
All three roles last between 6 – 12 weeks, depending on your other commitments. Volunteering opportunities are usually part-time, so that you have time to pursue other activities in the week.
We currently have three volunteering opportunities:
1. Academic support: Help us review literature and create an extended bibliography for Human Security. You would help us collate literature, create bibliographies, prepare summaries of literature and participate in a 3-day writing retreat. Thinking of a job in academia, or maybe a PhD? Then this placement might be just right for you.
2. Marketing support: Help us understand the context for Human Security better, by supporting our efforts to identity other organisations in the field of human security, and the types of insights and activities that they offer. This will help us improve how our work can contribute. This is particularly suited if you wish to pursue a career in business, marketing or communications.
3. Event Management support: We are planning a big international launch event in May 2013, and would really like your creative input to content and format; you’d also help the event management team in planning, support logistics and guest list management. If you are thinking about becoming an event planner, event manager or project manager – then this is for you.
Interested or questions?
Please send us an email (Aurelie.Broeckerhoff@coventry.ac.uk) explaining why you wish to volunteer with us. Please include a short CV (1-2 pages), so we can learn a bit more about you.
