Overview

Corruption is an evasive and inimical socioeconomic phenomenon that is pervasive in many parts of the world. Corruption is a household name but difficult to measure. Yet, it has potent arsenals that visibly downgrade the rule of law and fairness with attendant consequences on quality of governance and socioeconomic development. In Sub-Saran Africa (SSA), corruption is particularly a serious canker that goes to affect the integrity of service delivery and socio-economic rights of the people. The oil & gas sector is one of the sectors that have been bedevilled by the canker of corruption in SSA. Meanwhile, this sector significantly contributes to the natural resource base and income source for many SSA countries – thus, presenting a constant source of worry. Evaluating the root causes of and the solutions for corruption in the oil & gas sector has been a challenging process. Given this background and using transdisciplinary approach, this presentation seeks to explore the legal and regulatory framework for tackling corruption in the oil & gas sector in SSA. It interrogates the level of adequacy and resilience of the current architecture for fighting corruption in selected SSA countries and presents a cosmopolitan model for leveraging the opportunities to succeed in this endeavour.
