From Learning to Leaders: Black Student Excellence and Pathways to Success

The BME Staff Network invites you to join the presentation and discussion on the potential positive impact, targeted initiatives can have on Black Student outcomes.  It will also explore the role of mentoring and coaching for Black students. As well as the role that industry can play towards creating more equitable career opportunities and meaningful progression. We will be joined by Hilda and Chukwuma from the Black Intern Project at Coventry University, alongside one of our Alumni, Dr Tru Powell, who will all share their knowledge, expertise and experiences, when navigating the ‘world of work’ through a Black lens.

Speakers 

Dr Tru Powell

Dr. Tru Powell is a multi-award winning personal brand expert and creative entrepreneur. Tru has over 15 years in enterprise, the arts and live events, and is very passionate about supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs to get visible and build their personal brands.

Hilda Awomolo

Hilda is a communication and marketing professional with over seven (7) years of experience in developing marketing strategies, brand content, and managing projects. She has worked with start-ups and high-growth companies in various sectors across Africa, India, and the United Kingdom.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Mass Communication – India, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in International Marketing – Coventry University London.

With her experience working with matters relating to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), she is passionate about driving change through leadership, research, and developing effective strategies.

Currently, she is designing and rolling out the Coventry University Group Black Interns Project (BIP) which aims to improve diversity, eliminate disparity, and address underrepresentation in the UK workforce, by developing internship opportunities as well as a community of support for students in the form of mentorship and career development modules to help them to reach positive destinations in the world of work.

Annette Hay 

Annette works in Research Services at Coventry University and throughout her working career, Annette has maintained her lifelong commitment for social justice, with a particular interest in Race Equality.  Annette has over 30 years of ‘proactive’ engagement and leadership, in championing equality in local, national and international arenas. Since joining Coventry University, Annette has worked with staff and students towards embedding more inclusive work practices and values.  She is recognised for her strategic influence and input into the university’s policy, practice and external engagement.  In addition, her passionate leadership and networking capabilities, have led to her representing Coventry University on a number of Boards and Committees, including US based NADOHE (National Association of Diversity Officers in HE), ARMA (Association of Research Managers and Administrators) EDI Advisory Group, Coventry City’s Belgrade Theatre, Coventry University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Council, Race Equality Council (Chair), Black and Minority Ethnic Staff Network (Lead).

Chukwuma Madu  

Chucks Madu is currently a Project Manager at Coventry University Group with more than six (6) years’ experience in connecting strategy to operations across various sectors for organisations like Heineken & Sony Music Entertainment. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) degree in Chemical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Global Business from Coventry University.

In his role as Project Manager of a diversity and equality project – Black Interns Project – Chucks frequently engages with employers, strategic partners and other stakeholders for buy-ins. His ability to sell value with social justice has seen global employers such as Ralph Lauren, Kellogg’s and Manpower Group become partners with Coventry University to create work opportunities for students, eliminate ethnic attainment gaps and create inclusive work environments.

Chucks’ mantra is simple – dedicated to a life of what can I give – and this has positively shaped his ability to think critically and produce positive results. Outside of work, you would find him reading a book, listening to music or watching/playing football on the pitch with his mates.
