Building the Sustainable City, The Game: Festival of Social Science

This event forms part of Coventry University's Festival of Social Science.

The event will be a 90 minutes workshop for 10 to 20 people, to come together and use playful imagination and game design techniques to imagine what a sustainable city might look like, how could it work, and what challenges its citizens might encounter.

Have you ever played Monopoly, Risk, SimCity or Civilisation? Games are fun, but they also embody big ideas about how the economy, a city, or even the whole world works.

In this workshop, we will build on previous research projects to explore how basic principles of game design can be mixed with social science to explore and engage with the big themes and challenges of the 21st Century, first of all the idea of sustainability.

During this workshop you will be working in small, spontaneous groups, and with support and facilitation from a researcher with expertise in community research and playful methods you will  create your own paper-

based, Do-It-Yourself "Sustainable City: the Board Game".

By creating this game you will be able to build a tangible vision of how a sustainable city might look like and work, of who the different actors living in it might be, and of what challenges they might encounter and overcome.

You will come out of the workshop with an heightened awareness of the conflicts and challenges that shape our cities, with some ideas about how we might want to work towards changing the “rules” shaping them, and of course with your own DIY game!
