This event will discuss the outcomes of a recently completed Heritage Lottery Fund pilot project.

Abstract

The presentation will discuss the outcomes of a recently completed Heritage Lottery Fund pilot project done in collaboration with the National Paralympic Heritage Trust that used disabled interviewers to collect oral histories from sixteen British Paralympians in the Aylesbury area. The aim is then to apply to the Heritage Lottery Fund for further funding to carry out a much larger national project aimed at collecting a further 2-300 oral histories from British Paralympians (winter and summer) who have competed at a Paralympic Games since 1960. These oral histories will then be used by the National Paralympic Heritage Trust to educate the general public regarding the potential impact of sport upon the lives of disabled people and the wider issues disabled people face within society.

Biography

Dr Brittain is an Associate Professor (Research) within The Centre for Business in Society (CBiS) who specialises in sociological and historical aspects of disability and Paralympic sport, especially with regard to its impact upon the marginalisation of disabled people within the wider society.
