Coventry University will deliver a wide range of events as part of the UK’s biggest celebration of social science research.

As a national event that involves 42 universities, the annual Festival of Social Sciences (FoSS) showcases the latest research into people and society and allows the local community to engage and learn about topics relating to social science through events run by university researchers.

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), which supports research and training in social science subjects, is funding the two-week festival taking place across Coventry University’s city centre campus from 6-14 November.

Coventry University is collaborating with Rotterdam University to deliver a programme that aims to improve the mental wellbeing of teenage girls through a new app designed to guide mindfulness and talking skills. Interactive sessions that open discussions around food and nutrition will also be available to reframe perceptions around food and body image.

Other events include using game design to imagine and build sustainable cities and a webinar that explores the opportunities and risks of remote working for neurodiverse and disabled people.

The events are cost-free to attend and designed for people of all ages in a range of in-person, online and hybrid formats:

Coventry University is delighted to be hosting its first Festival of Social Science. It is a continuation of our commitment to providing forward-thinking solutions to social, economic, and cultural challenges.

It is a great opportunity to involve the local community in events that showcase the exciting and inspiring ways in which our research addresses common and relatable issues faced by people in their everyday lives.

Professor David McIlhatton, Institute Director and University Impact Lead

The festival comes less than a year after the ESRC awarded Coventry University a £1.25 million Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) to deliver a five-year programme of impact activity.

IAAs support critical early-stage translation of university research into real impacts, which helps transform public services, create new jobs, attract private investment, and forge new partnerships with business and charities.

This was the first IAA that Coventry University has received, reflecting the successes already delivered by its researchers.
