Transport solutions
The global challenge of climate change affects every one of us and requires urgent solutions – now. So much has already been achieved, with the shift towards more renewable energy, but now the transport sector is the single biggest producer of greenhouse gases.
Coventry University academic experts are focused on delivering sustainable transport solutions; working on the technologies which will accelerate the shift to electric propulsion. Not just for passenger cars, but also for air, rail, freight and maritime.
Our researchers are developing high performance batteries, electric drive systems and controls, as well as future green solutions, including hydrogen generation and propulsion. They take a full lifecycle approach and look at what happens to batteries and electronics when they reach their end of life, looking at how to reuse, repurpose and recycle in an energy efficient way.
The university has many initiatives in place to help manufacturers to decarbonise their factories and supply chains, by embedding a sustainable approach to production using the latest clean techniques. Taking a data-driven approach to reduce and sustain a low-carbon footprint for producing goods.
Research centres
Our E-Mobility and Clean Growth, Future Transport and Cities, and Manufacturing and Materials research centres is home to leading experts who work closely with the region, industry partners and key government stakeholders to develop resolutions for a sustainable future.
Clean Futures
The programme of work aims to position the West Midlands at the heart of the ‘Green Industrial Revolution’ and is led by the Connected Places Catapult alongside Coventry University and the Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation.
Clean Futures Catalyst
Empowering West Midlands businesses in the transport sector to adopt and develop sustainable technologies and practices through essential knowledge and guidance for growth and prosperity.
Skills
As industry starts to shift its efforts to sustainable transport solutions, new skills needed to ensure to ensure there is the capacity for new growth.
The Electrification Revolutions Skills (ERS) Hub, has been created by Coventry University to support the UKs electrification journey. Featuring specialist skills and career development, the hub connects the Power Electronics and Machine Drive (PEMD) community with latest in electrification training courses and job opportunities.
Electric Revolution Skills Hub
The national skills hub, aimed at supporting the Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) community, developed and led by Coventry University

With multiple pressures pushing the industry to meet ever tighter emission regulations, the need to develop and implement new technology is increasing all the time and the inherent risks can only be mitigated by a better understanding of the technology.
Coventry University's Centre for Advanced Low Carbon Propulsion Systems (C-ALPS) brings together academic expertise and state-of-the-art facilities in battery and supercapacitor cells, hydrogen fuel cells, e-motors and drives. In this environment, researchers and industry work together on the science and engineering behind the next generation of electrified propulsion systems for the automotive, aerospace, marine and rail industries.
Global engineering consultancy, FEV, is a recognised service provider in vehicle and powertrain development, digital mobility and the energy sector. As a founding partner of C-ALPS, its UK commercial operations are co-located in the same facility.
Together with its customers, FEV are shaping the future of the transportation sector for climate-neutral, efficient, connected, and safe mobility. With in-depth expertise, it develops innovative mobility solutions for the most advanced transportation experience from A to B. The C-ALPS team and FEV also work independently with customers, partners and other leading organisations within funded research projects.
