CAWR is the largest centre in the world doing transdisciplinary research on the links between agroecology, and sustainable food systems, water management and community resilience. In keeping with our research themes, our office is suitably situated at Ryton Organic Gardens. This 10 acre outdoor space also hosts a range of facilities to drive organically-managed research, including glasshouses, poly-tunnels and cultivated land, mainly used for vegetable production.
The Centre also houses a number of state of the art laboratories, including an Environmental Monitoring and Field Simulation Laboratory. Additional facilities include a video editing suite, postgraduate hot desks and a library.
Some of our teaching is conducted on-site giving students hands-on experiential learning, while campus based courses offer students the opportunity to interact with peers and access extensive university facilities. We also regularly host free seminars, workshops and lectures which are livestreamed to our social media platforms.
As a Doctoral Training Centre we offer bespoke training to our PhD students. Tailored work shops are run every year taking advantage of the breadth of knowledge and varied research areas of our staff. A Summer School also takes place with a strong focus on writing as well as sessions on surviving the PhD and time management. Learn more about this community.
