CCE Projects

Across the Centre for Creative Economies, our project work explores the formation and practice of creative economies and their outcomes for people, place and planet.

Our research allows us to combine social science, humanities and arts approaches in work that explores and explains the impacts of creative and cultural activities on economies understood in the broadest sense. Project funders have included Arts Council England (ACE), Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre (PEC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

Hamilton Studio, Bombay: the first twenty years after partition

This project digitises negatives, prints and documents at Hamilton Studio from the twenty years after Partition (1947-67), a period of change and political flux in India and of mass migration to the UK. Bombay was the port from which boats left and so many of those needing photographs for travel and work documents came to Hamilton Studios.

West Midlands Local Productivity Innovation Partnership

Coventry University are a project partner in this UKRI funded Phase 1 work. This initial phase entailed resource and support capacity across stakeholders to undertake partnership development and landscape evidence analysis required to design a Local Policy Innovation Partnerships (LPIPs) Phase 2 bid. LPIPs seek to address social, community, economic and environmental priorities that contribute towards inclusive sustainable economic growth.

City Change Through Culture: Securing the Place Legacy of Coventry City of Culture 2021

This place-based knowledge exchange project, led by Coventry University, was one of nine grants awarded as part of the AHRC’s wider Place Knowledge Exchange Programme. The Coventry project utilised the partnerships and relationships formed through the development and delivery of Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture (UK CoC 2021).

Surviving in a post-COVID world? Creative freelancers, business models and policy support

Freelancers within the creative industries are currently the focus of campaigning and targeted research, as well as being noted as a significant proportion of the workforce. This project’s policy engagement and research scoping activities provide updated insight into creative freelance business models in order to inform policy and support.

As an AHRC-funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership, this project develops citizen research to create walking trails and explore digital heritage.

Evaluation of Coventry City of Culture 2021

Coventry University was a lead partner in the Monitoring and Evaluation Group for Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture (UK CoC 2021). This multi-year innovative programme of research and evaluation work created and delivered a comprehensive strategy to evaluate, research and understand the range of cultural, economic and social impacts of Coventry UK City of Culture 2021.

Creative Accounting: Evolving Mindsets for Business and Finance Professionals

The aim of this project is to investigate how, through performance-led artistic interventions and provocations, the creative arts and playfulness can best be utilised to change traditional mindsets and facilitate a more integrated approach to the business of accounting.

Coventry Digital: a digital archive for the history and culture of the city of Coventry

Coventry Digital is an online resource about the city of Coventry. It was created by and is maintained by Coventry University as its commitment to UK City of Culture in 2021/2. The ambition is to create a ‘city’ archive which supports the different eco-systems across the city by binding together all kinds of data on all kinds of subjects and making it available as a resource.

Own Art Impact Study: factors impacting contemporary art galleries across the UK

Commissioned research to explore factors impacting contemporary art galleries across the UK, with a specific focus on the cost of living crisis. This project fed into member gallery communications and supported online training insights for the funder, Creative United.

Creative Freelancer Business Models and Place-Based Growth

This research project was designed to address an important evidence gap around the contribution of creative freelancers to the economic and place-based impacts of the creative industries.
