About CAMC
The Centre for Arts, Memory and Communities (CAMC), launched in 2019, is home to a vibrant research culture that weaves together three strands of collaborative and interconnected scholarship: Critical Practices, Cultural Memory and Well-being and the Arts.
Our research is both transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, bringing together traditional and practice research expertise from across the Arts and Humanities including:
- Art and Art History
- Curatorial Studies
- Design and Human Factors
- English Literature and Language
- Material and Cultural Studies
- Photography
We pursue excellence through our unique disciplines and share the belief that exchanges across disciplinary boundaries can be transformational, improving the lives and experiences of the individuals and communities with whom we engage. Our research tackles large and complex societal challenges (e.g. Ageing, Health and Well-being, Social Justice, Sustainability), combining disciplines through theory and practice.
We submitted under Unit of Assessment (UoA) 32- Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory in REF2021. 82% of our research was assessed as 4* (world-leading) or 3* (internationally excellent). We have a strong focus on co-creation, collaborative working with stakeholders and impact as evidenced by our REF2021 impact case studies (75% 4 star; 25% 3 star):
Pursuing excellence with impact, CAMC members create world-leading research that reaches across disciplinary boundaries, infusing an arts and humanities perspective into research in health, engineering, social justice and sustainability, among others. Our transdisciplinary research enables holistic, transformative engagements with complex social, intellectual and ethical problems, drawing on the past to imagine and create change in the future.

Our research has global reach, and our collaborations with international and UK-based partners have been supported by awards including European Commission Horizon Europe and Horizon 2020, Erasmus+, Leverhulme Research Fellowships, National Institute for Health Research, British Academy fellowships and AHRC networking grants.
We are consortium members of the AHRC Midlands Four Cities (M4C) Doctoral Training Programme, which brings talented PhD students into the Centre.
The Centre is also deeply local, and our members actively work to enrich and promote Coventry’s museums, galleries and heritage sites as well as fostering community health, mobility and access to creative and cultural productions.
