Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering
The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) is a collaboration between Unipart Manufacturing and Coventry University. AME is part of the Institute for Future Transport and Cities and its development was supported by the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s Catalyst Fund.

About the centre
AME has built a bespoke ‘Faculty on the Factory Floor’ at Unipart’s manufacturing site in the heart of Coventry, with a commitment to delivering world-class Manufacturing and Materials Engineering research. AME brings together academia, industry and research and development in a live manufacturing environment, with the aim of:
- Developing industry-ready, world class engineering graduates
- Conducting industry-led research in digital manufacturing applications and underpinning technologies
- Accelerating next generation powertrain-related technologies for automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, rail and renewables
- Disseminating research and new technologies for the benefit of the wider industry
- Driving economic growth by making UK engineering and manufacturing globally competitive
Significant investment has been made in facilities at AME, including state-of-the-art robotic automation, forming, joining, analysis and simulation, metrology and product verification technology and a demonstrator digital manufacturing line. Furthermore, the University’s unique manufacturing courses have been shaped by some of the leading minds in academia and industry, with the focus on activity-led, ‘live project’ learning.
Research within the Institute for Future Transport and Cities deals with a wide range of expertise including e-mobility, manufacturing and structures, future mobility and manufacturing.

Facilities
In addition to the manufacturing facilities within Unipart’s factory, the facilities available on the AME “shop floor” include:
- A multi-station digital manufacturing demonstration line
- Metrology laboratory with both contact and optical dimensional measuring equipment
- Visual component placing technology
- 8-axis robotic welding station
- Robotic laser welding station
- Electrical discharge machining station
- Tensile testing equipment
- Robots, including cobots, for research and teaching
- Sample preparation and inspection laboratory

AME is supporting the growth of UK industry by providing a pipeline of skilled engineering graduates that can make an immediate impact when they enter employment.
Through AME’s world class research base, the Institute aims to attract and deliver ground breaking projects designed to develop and test the latest technology in priority areas for the industrial and transport sectors, such as digital fabrication and control, product and process modelling, simulation and verification, and component light weighting.
A number of supply chain partners are already involved in several R&D projects and this number will continue to grow as AME looks to disseminate the knowledge gained across 1st, 2nd and 3rd tier firms.
AME’s team has used experience of working with small businesses, original equipment manufacturers, academia, business support providers and influential engineering groups to design a truly unique offer and learning experience.
The collaborators are involved with the research projects undertaken, ensuring that new processes and technologies can be developed to achieve product innovations, cost savings, as well as the delivery of solutions to environmental, economic and technological challenges.
Supply chain companies can also use the knowledge gained through research and access the state-of-the-art facilities to improve performance, open up new market opportunities and deliver manufacturing solutions.
In order to boost the technical capabilities of companies’ workforce, the Institute also offers access to skills and professional development courses.
Finally, funders and partners can work with AME to identify and explore new technologies that will attract high profile research projects and raise the productivity and competitiveness of the UK.
