Digital Manufacturing

Focus of our research

Research within our Digital Manufacturing theme focuses on exploring changes in manufacturing and engineering paradigms resulting from the development and adoption of digital technologies across multiple domains of the manufacturing value chain in order to address major scientific, industrial and societal challenges.

The key challenge of digital manufacturing is that technology is moving at an exponential pace and organisation and individuals are struggling to keep up with the change. As a result, ask ten different researchers or industrialist what does digital manufacturing means and you will get ten different answers. The answers will be based on the organisations own experiences and use cases and may range from simple examples of automation and robotics, to complex vertically and horizontally integrated value chains designed to optimise the delivery of high-value products and services.

For our research theme, digital manufacturing is all about purpose driven and value adding use cases where digital technologies are being applied to generate value creation and value capture within manufacturing and engineering businesses.

Our key areas of research includes:

  • Roadmap to digitalisation
  • Digital Twins use cases
  • Distributed manufacturing
  • Manufacturing as a Service
  • New manufacturing business models enabled by digital technology
  • Digitalisation and Intellectual Property Strategies
  • People-centred productivity
