Technology and Innovation Management

Research within our Technology and Innovation Management theme focuses on examining shifts in manufacturing and engineering theories and approaches in the face of the integration and evolution of technological advancements and innovative strategies to support high productivity and new revenue models. Our research offers foundational insights, underscoring innovation that aim to address critical scientific, industrial, and societal transformations.

Focus of our research

At the Research Centre for Manufacturing and Materials at Coventry University, we recognise that Intangible assets are invaluable to a firm’s competitive power and can equate to up to 90% of the total firm value. In fact, these invisible assets are often a firm’s only real source of competitive edge in manufacturing and engineering that can be sustained over time.

As such, our theme is dedicated to bridging the gap between technology and innovation management theories and the actual design, manufacturing, and re-configuration of products and services. More than just tangible assets and physical products, we delve deep into the intangible assets tied to these products, acknowledging their evolution throughout their lifecycle.

Integral to our work is the exploration of product-service systems. These can be groundbreaking manufacturing systems that promise excellence, adaptability and new value generation, especially in domains like future consumer goods, e-mobility, clean energy and health. A pivotal aspect of our research is the concept of Digital Twinning. In particular our group explore how every product and service design and every manufactured item retains a digital counterpart of its tangible and intangible component parts.
