Master of Arts by Research in Global Education

The Master of Arts by Research in Global Education is a part-time structured programme that is studied completely online.

Designed to develop you into an educational researcher with a global outlook, you will learn how to use research to change yourself and society, develop your professional knowledge and learn how to apply this in practice which could help improve your career prospects.

This course aims to develop your capability to work within a professional context whilst researching and theorising your own practice in schools, universities or other educational contexts.

Structure of programme

At the start of the programme, you will be given an introduction to the concept of global research. You will also study two modules:

Becoming a Global Education Researcher

This online module is intended to support participants from a wide range of educational contexts and disciplines, by offering a dynamic learning environment that aims to foster collaborative learning and sets you on the path for postgraduate study. Given the online nature of this module, there is a strong emphasis on developing personal capacity for self-directed learning and research, with appropriate support from academic staff. The module aims to provide you with the opportunity to:

  • re-engage with theory, research and practice in elements of the Educational Sciences and Professional Studies.
  • develop and enhance your professional practice through the integration and application of educational theory.

Composing Literature Reviews in Education

This online module is intended to support those in the early stages of completing a postgraduate research project in education studies. The aim of the module is to equip you with the theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary to craft a convincing research story by relating the work of others to your specific research question/s.

The premise of the module design is that in order to compose a successful literature review it is first necessary to understand the purposes and forms of the literature review as a genre of academic writing, in a disciplinary-specific context. Core activities therefore focus on recognising the underlying logic of texts and their typical genre features as well as engaging with strategies to effectively identify, evaluate and synthesise information. You will apply such understanding of macro- and micro-level textual features to your area of education research in order to construct a concrete pathway for developing the literature review component/s of an individual research project.

Most activities on the programmes are asynchronous, or recorded, to allow students to study at their own pace, with the support of a dedicated course team.

The Masters includes a number of distinct portfolio submissions, which will be progressively integrated and re-elaborated into the final dissertation, therefore providing a structured pathway towards its writing.

Assessment

This course is assessed through written work towards a final dissertation of approximately 33,000 words.
The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards achieving the intended learning outcomes.
Each module is approximately 200 study hours, and workshops are approximately 20 hours. You will also be expected to self-study in your subject area, as this is a research degree.

Opportunity to move onto the PhD in Global Education

For those who want to extend their knowledge of global educational research, and are perhaps considering a PhD in their future, then this MA by Research in Global Education offers that opportunity. You may be eligible to transfer to the PhD in Global Education at the end of years one or two.

Application details

Applicants should have at least five years’ experience working in an educational setting, as well as the specified entry requirements. As the doctorate focuses on professional practice, this is necessary in order for the application of theory to practice.
Your application should include a research proposal based on your area of study. To apply, please visit the PGR plus page.
