Partnership
Coventry University has a long-standing collaboration with Stellenbosch University, in South Africa, with the dual award programme launching in 2017.
As a well-established research-intensive institution on the African continent, Stellenbosch University is making a significant contribution towards the broadening of the global knowledge base. Their vision is to be globally recognised as excellent, inclusive, and innovative HEI, where they advance knowledge in service of society.
Current dual award PhD projects are based in the Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience (CAWR) and the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Life Sciences (CSELS).
Programme
Candidates are jointly supervised by researchers at both universities and will undertake the Coventry and Stellenbosch PhD Frameworks, meeting both universities' sets of progression requirements, with candidates spending a minimum of 8 weeks at the host institution. Fully funded studentships cover 3.5 years of study, with submission expected at the end of the 3.5 years
Candidates will undergo a joint viva voce examination and a research degree will be awarded from each institution.
Intakes predominantly take place in January.
Walter Sisulu University - Stellenbosch University - Coventry University Dual Award
We also have a DHET – RSA - British Council funded collaboration between the Centre for Global Learning at Coventry University, Stellenbosch University and Walter Sisulu University, focused on enhancing staff doctoral capacity training and expertise for underrepresented groups in South Africa.
Our current cohort of 11 candidates are jointly supervised by researchers from all three institutions and will be awarded a PhD from Coventry University and a PhD from Stellenbosch University upon successful completon of the programme.
