UN sponsored conflict resolution in Kyrgyzstan: Why do external peacebuilding interventions not correspond to insider needs?

Project overview

This research contributes to a better understanding of the multi-level formation (international, national, regional, local sites) of United Nations Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) projects in Kyrgyzstan and elsewhere. In particular, it explores the localization of the directives of the UN Secretary General’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism (2016) during UN peacebuilding project development processes in Kyrgyzstan and elsewhere.

The research included interviews in Kyrgyzstan that surveyed important debates over the drivers of radicalization and violent extremism and the way UN agencies and their local government and civil society partners conceive of and define these thematic concerns. Interviews were also conducted in the United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) in New York to situate and compare the experience of peacebuilding in Kyrgyzstan with the global experiences of the PBF across the numerous conflict-affected countries.
