Project Overview
Whilst both collective and collaborative drawing is being widely explored internationally, both within and beyond educational institutions, there is surprisingly little serious research published on the topic. This realisation led to the first international Drawing Conversations Symposium, accompanied by the Drawn Conversations Exhibition at Coventry University, UK, in December 2015, and a series of publications.
The Drawing Conversations symposia, exhibitions and publications are convened by Professor Jill Journeaux. The initial symposium: Drawing Conversations: Collective and Collaborative Drawing was held at Coventry University in 2015, was accompanied by the exhibition Drawn Conversations and resulted in the book Collective and Collaborative Drawing in Contemporary Practice edited by Jill Journeaux and Helen Gorrill.
In 2017 the second international symposium at Coventry University: Drawing Conversations 2: Body, Space Place resulted in a second book in that series edited by Jill Journeaux, Sara Reed and Helen Gorrill published in February 2020.
‘You and I are discontinuous beings,” an exhibition held at Birmingham City University’s International Projects Space in May 2018 to accompany the book launch of the first book, featured new work by the contributors to that first book, and the catalogue included the essay ‘Drawing as if Dancing Together’ by Victoria Mitchell.
The Drawing Conversations 3: Drawing Talking to the Sciences symposium was held at The Ruskin, Lancaster University in January 2020 and was accompanied by the exhibition Drawn To Investigate which was curated by Sarah Casey and Gerry Davies.
The fourth international symposium in the series: Drawing Conversations 4: Engaging with Sites of History and Narrative will take place in the Barbara Hepworth Building, Huddersfield University on the 4th September 2020, and will be accompanied by an exhibition curated by Simon Woolham.
