Project overview
The most prevalent physical activity intervention for those with or at risk of morbidity are commonly referred to as Exercise on Referral Schemes or Physical Activity Referral Schemes. Various different models exist, but typically a health professional will refer the person to a leisure centre for a free, 12 week programme with a trained exercise specialist that typically takes place at a leisure centre or similar facility.
In 2013 the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) provided guidance on providing brief advice to improve health and wellbeing by raising awareness of the importance of physical activity and encouraging people to increase or maintain their physical activity behaviour
The implementation of lifestyle clinics that offer tailored support over a few weeks that goes beyond brief interventions but is not as substantial as that offered by physical activity referral schemes is in its infancy. Due to the limited examination of lifestyle clinics our approach is to conduct a mixed-methods service evaluation of lifestyle clinics in Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire.
