Introduction

This is a four year collaborative studentship which requires the candidate to spend two full years based at Coventry University (UK) and two years based at A*STAR Research Institute (Singapore). The usual pattern is first and fourth years at Coventry and second and third year at A*STAR Research Institute.

Project details

The Transport Safety and Simulation (TSS) research group, was launched in 2022 with the aim to create better futures and changing the way the world moves.

The Transport Safety and Simulation (TSS) research group focuses in modelling and assessing human chances of survival in transport collisions, studying the human safety and crashworthiness responses in future micro-mobility, investigating design and legislative changes yielding to safer transport, programming complex routines to extract soft tissue injuries and researching opportunities to cascade research findings at a global level to support ‘Vision Zero’. The TSS research group addresses future mobility safety challenges, from e-scooters, through autonomous vehicles to eVTOL aircraft, considering vulnerable road users (VRU), occupants, Advanced Driver assistance (ADAS) and vehicle structures. Our team consists of scientists with strong theoretical engineering and medical knowledge and industrial experience.

The TSS research group is also supported by the National Transport Design Centre (NTDC) with a team of psychologists, human factors experts, industrial and automotive designers alongside engineers and experts in human systems integration. The team is complemented with medical experts from the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology, as well as strong synergies with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), HORIBA MIRA (UK), as well as international universities experts in transport safety, namely University Gustave Eiffel in Marseille (FR). The research group is using explicit finite element and multi-body techniques, human body models as well as machine learning techniques to provide on-board an real-time safety solutions.

The TSS research group was awarded the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award 2021 on “Delivering Improved Pedestrian Post Crash Triage” and as a successful candidate, you will undertake an interesting and cutting edge research project. You will also disseminate research outputs and develop external networks nationally and internationally. If you would like to be a part of this important initiative and make a unique contribution to worldwide innovation in this developing area, apply now.

Funding

Coventry University and A*STAR jointly offer a fully-funded PhD studentship including tuition fees and stipend/bursary, that is open to both UK/EU and international graduates as part of the A*STAR Research Attachment Programme (ARAP).

Coventry University and A*STAR will only cover the stipend up to a maximum of two years each. Changes to the mobility pattern will only be considered under exceptional circumstances and can impact on the duration of the course and level of funding available. Should a candidate request any changes to mobility which results in the period spent in either the UK or Singapore extending beyond two years then the candidate is responsible for covering the stipend for that period.

Benefits

The successful candidate will receive comprehensive research training including technical, personal and professional skills.

All researchers at Coventry University (from PhD to Professor) are part of the Doctoral College and Centre for Research Capability and Development, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average.

PLUS

  • The potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a 3.5 years.
  • A minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS academic overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component).
