Are you interested in teaching as a career?

The following Coventry University undergraduate courses offer you the chance to undertake Initial Teacher Training (ITT) at the same time as completing your undergraduate degree studies:

• BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Secondary School Experience
• BSc (Hons) Computing with Secondary School Experience

On both of these courses, towards the end of your first year you can apply to join our Secondary School Experience scheme, which involves an interview, along with a DBS check and literacy and numeracy tests. If successful, as well as graduating with your honours degree, you would also receive recommendation for QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). This would allow you to obtain full-time employment as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) without the need for further study such as a PGCE etc. After one year of successful employment, you should then have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

You will also be given the opportunity to participate in the School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme. As a SCITT trainee, you could spend time during your second and third year of your subject degree, teaching and learning alongside expert practitioners. You could work with a selected partner school within the Coventry SCITT. Students who undertake this pathway must decide during the first year of their degree if they wish to opt into the Secondary School Experience pathway. The selection process involves interview and teaching sessions. Subject to passing these, students will then follow the training pathway.

What are the Benefits?

You may qualify for a bursary from the Department of Education, which offers a bursary of £9,000 for mathematics and computing teacher training, payable in the final year of the course. For the latest information on bursaries please visit the government’s initial teacher training webpage.

Outstanding training and support

School placements and training are arranged for you and you would receive support both from academic staff at Coventry University as well as school based staff who would support you to achieve the standards required for QTS.

Mathematics or Computing degree

The subject specific content of the degree programme provides you with the opportunity to learn the knowledge and skills required as a mathematician or computing professional.

Excellent employment prospects

Teaching is a very worthwhile and rewarding career and the demand for new teachers in both mathematics and computing is very high. At the end of this programme you will be qualified to take a post as a teacher at secondary level.

If you decide to pursue a career outside the teaching profession, you will still be in a strong position upon successful completion of your course, as the subject specific modules aim to provide you with the expertise required to become a mathematician or computing professional.
