Extended Masters with Professional Experience
The School of Health and Care, School of Life Sciences and School of Psychological, Social and Behavioural Sciences have developed a suite of courses which aim to enable you to combine a Master’s degree with relevant professional experience. All students enrolled on these courses undertake 6-8 months of professional experience, either externally or on campus. Placement hosts include local, national and multi-national companies, hospitals and research organisations.
These courses are designed to enhance employability skills and provide the opportunity to gain relevant industry experience sought by employers. Embedded throughout the courses is ongoing guidance and opportunities to develop skills and attributes which aim to help you to secure a professional experience, succeed during the placement and thrive beyond graduation.
To simulate the employment cycle you will be offer the opportunity to apply for opportunities (both on and off campus). With the support of employability specialists, you will be given the opportunity to focus on developing the skills required to secure a placement which includes CV writing, cover letter writing and multiple mock interviews. In addition, other modules focus on developing critical judgement and enhancing the practical skills and knowledge sought by employers.
Professional experience opportunities (whether within an external company or within the University) are subject to a competitive application and selection process. Such experiences may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation or University.
Students who are not successful in securing professional work experience outside the University will have the opportunity to undertake campus-based professional experience, which will aim to deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.
Following the internship you will be assessed by a formal report and reflection on learning development, raising your awareness of their growing employability skills and attributes.
Internships secured by current and previous students include a diverse range of exciting and challenging opportunities including GlaxoSmithKline, Severn Trent Water, local hospitals and The Anthony Nolan Trust.
