Enhancing Employability
Going to University is a fantastic achievement, but simply completing a degree doesn’t guarantee a graduate job afterwards. There are many ways that a student can further their employability prospects and accentuate their status in a crowded graduate job market. At Coventry, 95% of our graduates are in employment or further study six months after graduating, signalling our commitment to making our graduates as employable as possible. A good start is getting in touch with the Careers and Employability Service on campus.
- Mandatory employability modules are embedded within the course structure of many courses to ensure students are enhancing their employability on an ongoing process, and are prepared to begin their career as soon as they leave. All modules share the common goal of improving a student's employability by developing skills that employers are looking for in a potential graduate.
- Each faculty also provides their own employability schemes such as work placements with relevant organisations, in-house and department work experience and projects and professional experience.
- Most students are enrolled onto their course with the option of doing a sandwich year in their 3rd year of study. A sandwich year can come in the form of a placement year in industry or a year abroad. A year in industry can offer a valuable insight into the working environment, provide relevant experience for students' CVs and build a lasting relationship and further employment opportunities with the employer.
- A year abroad can provide a wealth of new experiences and provide the opportunity for a student to immerse themselves in a new culture and meet people from all types of backgrounds. This can be organised through the Centre of Global Engagement. The Centre can also help to arrange voluntary placements or work opportunities abroad and can often offer support in terms of funding.
- The International Centre for Transformational Enterprise fosters a business culture within the University and the wider community. Students can benefit from their expertise while they are studying or after they graduate. The Centre partners start-up companies and local businesses with students and also helps to encourage and equip graduate start-ups with the skills and expertise needed in business.
- Many students' part-time jobs provide valuable experience when looking for gradaute jobs as well as a useful income. The Futureworks is owned by Coventry University Enterprises Ltd and helps students find work across a range of industries, with a range of flexible and part-time contracts available.
