Course overview

Hone critical and analytical skills through exploring stylistic features of the English language, discuss major English literature themes and authors, engage with theory and practice of teaching English to speakers of other languages and approach key issues in Education Management.

You will practise microteaching and discuss innovative teaching theory and practice.
You will also have the opportunity² to gain a recognised professional teaching qualification¹: the Teaching Knowledge Test accredited by Cambridge Assessment English, as part of the module Professional Enhancement: Managing the Teaching and Learning Process (Please note that you must be studying on-campus in the UK to take this test.)
You will have the option to apply for a ‘professional experience’ opportunity,² designed to further develop your skills and knowledge with the aim of maximising your employability prospects. See the ‘What you'll study’ section for more information.

What you'll study

This MA course has been designed to enhance your knowledge of English language and literature, while at the same time providing you with the opportunity to engage with Education Management and develop your skills in teaching English to speakers of other languages. The course should stand you in good stead for the purpose of becoming an effective instructor or manager in a range of education settings.

Through the range of modules offered on this course, you’ll develop skills in teaching English to speakers of other languages, and explore key themes in Education Management theory and practice.

You’ll also undertake stylistic and literary analysis of English texts, designed to further develop your analytical skills. You’ll encounter major themes in English literature, engage with cutting-edge critical theories and consider the importance of literature for the regional and global concerns of the 21st century.

English Language Teaching in Practice - 15 credits

This is a practical module that introduces you to the teaching, learning and assessment of English in a variety of settings. You will engage in peer reviews and observations of teaching and microteaching sessions. You will reflect on the principles underpinning pedagogic planning, practise session plan design, deliver your teaching plan and evaluate it after your taught session. You will learn how to support students both face-to-face and online and to give effective and consistent feedback.

Teaching English through Literature - 15 credits

This module aims to examine how literature can support the teaching of the English language. It provides suggestions for fostering language development and communicative competence by integrating literature into the English language classroom. You will discuss the existing body of theoretical research as well as analyse concepts and issues related to the teaching of literature and to the teaching of language through literature.

Principles and Practice of Education Management - 15 credits

This module aims to introduce you to the principles and practice of education management, leadership and administration in a variety of educational settings, including the higher education setting. The module will develop your understanding and knowledge of Education Management processes and relationships and their implementation.

Case Studies Analysis in Educational Project Management - 15 credits

This module aims to prepare you for managing programmes in educational organisations. The module will develop your understanding of project and programme management processes and their implementation within an organisational setting. The module will also introduce you to several Project Management (PM) methodologies and case studies and enable you to evaluate PM methodologies and their implementation in an organisational setting.

Stylistics - 15 credits

This module deals with stylistics, a field of study in which linguistic theories are used to identify and describe the distinguishing features (or style) of a text. Analysing a style involves looking closely and systematically at the formal features of a text and then considering how those features affect and contribute to the meaning and interpretation of the text in question. This module equips you with an understanding of the linguistic models and analytic techniques that can be used to describe, analyse and interpret a range of literary, as well as non-literary, texts.

Literary Periods and Genres in English Literature - 15 credits

This module offers you an overview of the major periods and literary forms (prose, poetry and drama) and examines how literary works have been influenced by historical and socio-cultural trends. You will study a broad range of literary texts ranging from classical and medieval, through to the Renaissance and eighteenth century, to the Modern period.

Developing academic skills for postgraduate study - 15 credits

This module will help you develop your academic writing skills so you can carry out and complete written tasks on your MA programmes. Activities will focus on fostering and enhancing your ability to communicate effectively when writing in English in specific academic contexts.

Research Methods - 15 credits

This module provides a sound basis to support you in the undertaking of a substantial research project appropriate to master’s level, in terms of the identification of a topic and the development of an appropriate research strategy for its completion. You will learn how to retrieve, annotate and discuss appropriate sources and how to collect, classify and analyse primary and secondary data. The module will also cover how to adhere to academic writing standards and ethics requirements and how to avoid plagiarism.

Dissertation - 50 credits

This module supports you in the undertaking of a substantial research project appropriate to master’s level, in terms of the identification of a topic, the development of an appropriate research strategy for its development and completion, and its final writing up as a dissertation. In the second part of the module, you will be expected to produce an original piece of extended writing with the support of your allocated supervisor.

Professional Enhancement: Managing the Teaching and Learning Process - 10 credits

The aim of this module is to discuss the key principles underlying managing the teaching and learning process, including language classroom management. You will study issues relating to learner language and teacher language and investigate how the language used by a teacher can affect learners’ behaviour. The module will also help you to understand how to manage an ELT classroom in various contexts and with learners of different abilities.

With professional experience option

The professional experience opportunity² enables you the opportunity to apply for optional professional experience in semester 1, which, upon successfully securing an opportunity, will extend the duration of your master’s to either 16, 20 or 24 months. The professional experience provides an opportunity for you to develop expertise and experience in your chosen field with the aim of enhancing your employability.

Please note that the optional professional experience modules incur an additional tuition fee, which for 1 semester of professional experience is £1,333.33, for 2 semesters of professional experience is £2,666.67, and for 3 semesters of professional experience is £4,000.

Professional experience may also be subject to additional costs, visa requirements being met, subject to availability and/or competitive application. This course can be offered on a part-time basis. Whilst we would like to give you all the information about our part-time offering here, it is tailored for each course each year depending on the number of part-time applicants. Teaching contact hours

The number of full-time contact hours may vary from semester to semester, however, on average, it is likely to be around 12 contact hours per week in the first year.

Additionally, you will be expected to undertake significant self-directed study of approximately 35 hours each week, depending on the demands of individual modules.

The contact hours may be made up of a combination of face-to-face teaching, individual and group tutorials, and online classes and tutorials.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessments, facilities and support services. There may be additional costs not covered by this fee such as accommodation and living costs, recommended reading books, stationery, printing and re-assessments should you need them.

The following are additional costs not included in the tuition fees:

Any costs associated with securing, attending or completing a placement (whether in the UK or abroad).

The rights of Irish residents to study in the UK are preserved under the Common Travel Area arrangement. If you are an Irish student and meet the residency criteria, you can study in England, pay the same level of tuition fees as English students and utilise the Tuition Fee Loan.

**EU Support Bursary

Following the UK's exit from the European Union, we are offering financial support to all eligible EU students who wish to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree with us full-time. This bursary will be used to offset the cost of your tuition fees to bring them in line with that of UK students. Students studying a degree with a foundation year with us are not eligible for the bursary.

How do you know if you need to pay UK or international tuition fees?

We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Your fee status determines your tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available to you. The rules about who pays UK (home) or international (overseas) fees for higher education courses in England are set by the government's Department for Education. The regulations identify all the different categories of student who can insist on paying the home rate. The regulations can be difficult to understand, so the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) has provided fee status guidance to help you identify whether you are eligible to pay the home or overseas rate.

If you meet all the criteria required by any one category, including any residence requirements, your institution must charge you the home rate. You only need to find one category that you fit into.

³Tuition fees

The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated in the above table for the first Academic Year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK (home) students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase is expected to be in line with inflation.

For International Students, we may increase fees each year but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation. If you defer your course start date or have to extend your studies beyond the normal duration of the course (e.g. to repeat a year or resit examinations) the University reserves the right to charge you fees at a higher rate and/or in accordance with any legislative changes during the additional period of study.
